Kirkintilloch Pipe Band

About

Kirkintilloch pipe band is one of the oldest civilian pipe bands in the world, established in 1888 and was one of the founding members of the Scottish Pipe Band Association (Now Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association).

The band is currently a community teaching band and plays regularly at local events including the Kirkintilloch Canal Festival, Armistice Day Parade, and Kirkintilloch Gala Day. We have several experienced members able to provide tutoring in chanter, bagpipes, snare drum, tenor drum and bass drum. Teaching is provided free to members on Wednesday nights; additional one to one lessons can be arranged subject to availability in person and via skype/zoom.

Pipe Major – Callum Kirk

Callum learned pipes from age 11, benefiting from lessons from P/M Angus MacDonald, Angus J MacLellan, Kenny MacDonald, Willie Morrison and several others. Callum had solo success as a youngster at local and National Mods, The Glasgow Highland Club, and Combined Cadet Force piping competitions. Callum played in Grade 1 and 2 Pipe Bands with The City of Glasgow Pipes and Drums, Carluke Baron of Lee, and the Vale of Atholl (Grd1), from 1993 – 2003. Callum also taught at several local pipe bands and the RSPBA summer school, before taking a lengthy hiatus to focus on work as a semi-pro guitarist, a career in Engineering, and raising a family. Callum has recently returned to playing and teaching bagpipes, and joined the band in 2022 as pipe major.

Leading Drummer – Dale Ritchie

Dale Ritchie started drumming at the well known Knightswood Juvenile pipe band, and has played with several Grade 1 bands over the years in Scotland and the USA, including Glasgow Skye Association, Toyota, Long Beach, Bishopbriggs and Misty Isles Pipe Bands. Dale played in Kirkintilloch Pipe Band previously and recently returned to Scotland after living in the USA for approx. 20 years.

Band Secretary/Bass Section Lead – Marion Walls

Marion Walls is well known in the Scottish pipe band scene as a stalwart member of the Kirkintilloch Pipe Band, keeping the band going through thick and thin over the last 40 years. Marion has played tenor and bass drum in the band, including past Grade 2 competition successes. Marion also played with Strathkelvin and Glasgow Skye Association pipe bands. Marion is still heavily involved in the day to day running of the band and leads the bass section, as well as providing tuition in bass and tenor drum.
